BIKES & TRANSIT

Bikes and Transit

Bicycling can be an easy and inexpensive way to get to a Metro, MARC, or VRE station, a bus stop, or park and ride lot. Listed below are the bike policies for the area transit providers. Folding bikes are permitted on all transit services. See Wikipedia for folding bike information.

Metro Bike-'N-Ride

Metrorail Bicycles are permitted on Metrorail (limited to two bicycles per car) weekdays except 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bicycles are permitted all day Saturday and Sunday as well as most holidays (limited to four bicycles per car). Bicycles are not permitted on Metrorail on July 4th and other special events or holidays when large crowds use the system. The Metro Bike-'N-Ride Guidelines are available online and in station take-one racks. Click here for a list of Metrorail station lockers and racks and information on Bicycling applying for a locker.

For the safety, comfort and convenience of all passengers, follow these guidelines whenever you bring a bicycle into the Metrorail system.

• Enter and exit through the first and last—not the center emergency—doors. In an emergency, place your bicycle on the seats and leave it on the train.

• Only regular bicycles are permitted (maximum size 80" long, 48" high and 22" side).

• No tricycles or training wheels are allowed. • Use the elevator at all times. Do not take bicycles on escalators.

• Avoid blocking doorways and aisles.

• Yield to other passengers.

• Do not ride bicycles in stations, on platforms or trains.

• Keep both wheels on the ground and the kickstand up.

• Maintain control of your bicycle.

• If you are under 16 years of age, you must be accompanied by an adult.

Metrobus

All Metrobuses are equipped with heavy-duty racks attached to the front of each bus. There is no fee for bringing a bike on a bus or on Metrorail. Unlike Metrorail, bikes will be allowed on buses even during rush hours. You are responsible for loading, securing and removing your bicycle from the rack. Up to two bikes can be stored in each rack, which cyclists can easily load and unload themselves, following the simple instructions affixed to the racks. The racks also have a locking mechanism to prevent bikes from coming loose. And, for safety, buses have special mirrors that allow bus operators to see the bike racks and customers loading bikes. For more information on using the bike racks, see the Washington Area Bicyclist Association Web site.

Ride On Buses (Montgomery County)

Bicycle racks are mounted on the front of all Ride On buses. Each rack holds two bikes. For more information about RIDE ON's Bike Program click here.

Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Trains

Folding bicycles are allowed on all VRE Trains. These are bicycles with a frame that folds and wheels come together. For more information about VRE bicycle policies click here.

Maryland Transit Administration (MTA)

Baltimore Metro Subway & Light Rail

Bicycles are permitted on all MTA Light Rail and Metro Subway service except on crowded trains. If the train is crowded due to morning or evening rush hour, sporting events or special events, please wait for the next train.

MARC Commuter Train

MTA Buses

Many MTA buses are equipped with special bicycle racks that allow transit riders to transport their bicycles on the bus with them! Each rack holds two bicycles.
